Strength Train Your Brain: The Memory Palace Technique

If you want to get into better physical shape, you might run, ride a bike, or lift weights to exercise. But what if you want to exercise your brain to improve your “mental fitness”?

In 2002, eight-time world memory champion Dominic O’Brien set a world record by memorizing a random sequence of 54 decks of playing cards (a total of 2,808 cards) after looking at each card just once. O’Brien, however, explains that he wasn’t born with a special talent; in fact, he started out at a disadvantage. Diagnosed with dyslexia, O’Brien dropped out of school at only 16 years old. So how did he go from a high school dropout suffering from dyslexia and symptoms of ADHD to a world memory champion?

In this course, we will study and apply the techniques used by memory masters such as O’Brien and others, especially the method of loci, also known as the memory palace. This method is not new; it is said to have been used 2500 years ago in ancient Greece. It’s an extremely powerful method that can be used to memorize a wide variety of information. Although the technique may seem complicated and difficult, learning and applying it is unbelievably fun. We will tap into our creativity and use vivid (and sometimes even hilarious) imagery to store information in our memory palaces.

This class is suitable for learners of all ages. Learners still in school can use this method to prepare for tests more effectively. Adult students can enjoy improving their "mental fitness" while learning effective methods useful for work or pleasure. We can memorize anything from the US presidents to ancient Chinese poetry. I invite you to join me as we walk together on the path toward memory mastery!
